How are crowns fitted?
First, your dentist will prepare your damaged tooth by carefully reshaping it. Then, a digital scan will be taken to create your custom crown. On your next visit, your permanent crown will be securely bonded in place.
-
How do I know if I need a crown?
A dental crown is like a protective cap that covers a damaged tooth, restoring its shape, size, and strength. You might need one if you have a large cavity that’s too big for a filling, a cracked or weakened tooth, or after a root canal treatment. If you notice persistent tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, or visible damage to your tooth, give us a call to book a consultation.
-
Is it painful having a dental crown fitted?
While you might feel some pressure or mild discomfort during the procedure, your dentist will ensure you’re comfortable throughout.
-
How long is the crown preparation and fitting procedure?
The process begins with our dentist preparing your tooth, which involves removing any decay and shaping it to accommodate the crown. Next, they’ll take Digital scan of your tooth, which is needed to create a crown which is a perfect fit. While you wait for your permanent crown to be crafted (usually 2 weeks), a temporary crown is placed. During your second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and carefully fit and adjust your new permanent crown.
-
Will I need to have my crown replaced at any point?
The lifespan of a dental crown can range from 10 to 30 years, depending on whether you grind your teeth, chew hard foods, or use your teeth as a tool, as all of these actions can shorten a crown’s life. Changes in your mouth over time, such as receding gums or tooth decay underneath the crown, can also speed up the need for a replacement.
-
How do I look after my crown?
Although our crowns are very durable, you’ll be advised to avoid extremely hard or sticky foods, as they can damage or dislodge it.
